While tourism in this area traces its roots back to the early 20th century, the complete revolution that occurred during the sixties shaped the tourism industry as we know it today or as we remember it. In newspapers like Makarska Riviera, later Makarsko Primorje, interesting and informative articles filled the front pages during the summer months about record numbers of foreign guests on the coast, the global culinary offerings, and numerous newly opened hotels that dazzled with their brilliance, attracting visitors to terraces where dances were held every evening. Luxurious streams of wine and champagne accompanied by melodies of the Adriatic created memories of the scent of sea and pine, salt on the skin, and the beauty of the landscape beneath Biokovo.
